Jared Goff Is Top Three (and He's Not Two or Three)

We're seven weeks into the NFL season and it's time for a Jared Thomas Goff appreciation post. The 30-year-old from Novato, California is currently playing some of the best football in his entire career. At this point in the season, Goff is currently 2nd in Completion Percentage (73.6%), 3rd in Passing Yards per Game (268.3), 6th in Passing Touchdowns (10 in 6 games), 1st in Passer Rating (111.5), with only 4 Interceptions and 2 Game Winning Drives. He is currently on pace to finish his 9th season with 4,561.1 Passing Yards and 28+ Passing Touchdowns, both of which wouldn't even eclipse his best seasons to date. Point is - Jared Goff is playing some damn good football right now.

There's an awesome stat going around right now on social media that highlights the fact that over the past three games, Goff has posted a 140+ passer rating, a feat which only three other QB's in NFL history have done - Rodgers (MVP), Warner (MVP), and Staubach (did not win MVP). Pretty crazy stuff from the former #1 overall pick, if you ask me. It's also worth mentioning that three game stretch included matchups against Seattle, Dallas, and Minnesota. Minnesota is touted by most as the best defense in the league at the moment. Nonetheless, Jared went 22/25 280 yards and 2 TD's. All of that, without one of their starting offensive lineman as well, Kevin Zeitler.

So, if all those stats weren't enough to sway your opinion, let's dive into the leagues top quarterbacks and we'll let the numbers speak for themselves...

Jared Goff vs Patrick Mahomes

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Mahomes: 67.9%, 1389 yards, 6 TD, 8 INT
  • Winner: Goff CLEARS the MVP favorite, and it's not even close. A lot of what makes Mahomes so successful though, is his ability to win games when the game isn't going how he wants it too. He has a ton of intangibles that don't show up on the box score. So, no disrespect to the former Texas Tech QB, but Goff has been the better QB so far this season.

Jared Goff vs Lamar Jackson

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Jackson: 67%, 1529 yards, 10 TD, 2 INT
  • Winner: Goff (barely) over Jackson. This is one of the tougher matchups on the list. Lamar Jackson has not been as accurate and does not have as many passing yards, however he has two less INT's and almost 400 more rushing yards. There is a world where you could argue that Lamar Jackson has been the better quarterback, but I'm going to disagree. Goff has 1 more game winning drive, and the better passer rating. I will give Ravens fans a pass if they disagree though, LJ is a baller.

Jared Goff vs Joe Burrow

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Burrow: 70.4%, 1759 yards, 14 TD, 2 INT
  • Winner: Goff (theoretically) over Burrow. I'm going to factor in the fact that Burrow has one extra game under his belt than Goff. Goff wins the yards per game battle, has more game winning drives, and a higher passer rating. It's also worth mentioning that his team is 5-1, whilst the Bengals are 3-4.

Jared Goff vs Josh Allen

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Allen: 63%, 1483 yards, 12 TD, 0 INT
  • Winner: Goff over Allen... Et tu, brute? More of the same with Allen, continuing on from the Burrow discussion. Goff has one less game, but more yards and a better completion percentage. Better passer rating, more game winning drives, and a better record. Even with the season that Allen is having - 0 INT's through 7 games is huge for him and his career, however I still can't put my favorite non-Lions player over Goff.

Jared Goff vs Jordan Love

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Love: 61.5%, 1351 yards, 15 TD, 8 INT
  • Winner: Goff over Love, just like their team's respective records. In all fairness, the quarterback from Utah State has put some solid numbers, especially the 15 TD's in only five games. However, he's been far less accurate, already accruing 8 INT's. His passer rating is currently sitting at 94.1, which ranks 14th best in the league. I also haven't even mentioned that their backup QB, Malik Willis, has a better record than Jordan Love. He's not even their best QB?! (Just kidding)

Jared Goff vs Baker Mayfield

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Mayfield: 70.9%, 1489 yards, 15 TD, 5 INT
  • Winner: Goff over Mayfield, fellow #1 overall pick who's also with a new team. Both quarterbacks have played six games, have similar completion percentages, yards, TD's, and INT's. Despite Mayfield getting the better of Goff and the Lions in week two, I'm giving the edge to Goff. He's got a better passer rating and has more receiving TD's than the Buccaneer. Yes, that's actually true. Jared Goff = Lions QB1 and WR3.

Jared Goff vs Geno Smith

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Smith: 68.5%, 1985 yards, 8 TD, 6 INT
  • Winner: Goff beats Smith again, for the second time this season. I've got a love for a guy like Geno Smith. Journeyman, turned two-time pro-bowler, whose putting up solid numbers despite having a slow start to his career. Consistently overlooked, all the while putting up numbers. If the Seahawks defense was even half of what it used to be, they'd be my NFC West favorites every year. The reality is though, Goff wins the passer rating, TD, INT, and completion percentage battle. Sorry Seahawks fans.

Jared Goff vs Brock Purdy

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Purdy: 63.9%, 1841 yards, 9 TD, 7 INT
  • Winner: Goff over Purdy, revenge for last year's NFC title game. Despite not having the passing yards that Purdy has in total, Goff's averaging more yards per game than Brock. In fact, he clears Brock in every passing category - TD's, INT's, passer rating, completion percentage, etc. I love my guy Mr. Irrelevant and know he's better than the discourse that surrounds him on twitter (it's not X), but that's just how good Goff has been so far this season.

Jared Goff vs Jayden Daniels

  • Goff: 73.6%, 1610 yards, 10 TD, 4 INT
  • Daniels: 75.6%, 1410 yards, 6 TD, 2 INT
  • Winner: Goff over last year's Heisman trophy winner, Daniels. Jayden Daniels is the only QB in the NFL that has a higher completion percentage than Goff, which is an impressive feat - especially for a rookie. However, that's where the accolades start and end (aside from INT's). Goff has thrown for more TD's, more yards, and has a higher passer rating, all with one less game to his credit this season as well. The future is bright for Daniels, but Goff's shining moment is now.

Final Verdict... Jared Goff > Your Team's QB. Argue with a wall. I don't care what your feelings are or "WhO wOuLd YoU rAtHeR hAvE oN yOuR tEaM" because I'll take Goff any day of the week. The fact of the matter is - Jared Goff is the best quarterback in the NFL right now. Give him his flowers, let him have his moment. After everything he's been through - getting shipped off to Detroit to "die" after leading the Rams to a Super Bowl. After going 3-10-1 in his first season with the Lions and winning the NFC North just two years later. This man deserves his moment in the spotlight. It's his turn and there's no one more deserving than him.
